A comb is a device made of solid material, generally flat, usually plastic, always toothed, and is used in hair care for straightening and cleaning hair or other fibers. Combs can have a minimum of three prongs or "teeth".
The earliest combs were made from bone, ivory, wood and sometimes even silver, brass and tin. There was a a time when tortoise shells and horns were used to make combs. These two materials were heated so that they'd be soft and moldable. They were poured into molds of combs and cooled. When they hardened, they retained the new shape and were effective in caring for hair. Combs are among the oldest tools known to mankind, having been found in very refined forms already in settlements dating back to 5000 years ago in Persia.
Today most combs are made with either plastic or celluloid and even wood. You can find them in various designs, all with a specific use in hair care. Wood combs and brushes generally give less static than plastic combs. There's a special kind of hair comb that's used in combing through and straightening extremely curly hair. This is called a "hot comb", it's made of metal and uses heat in straightening the hair out. Wedding or bridal combs are made of delicate materials and are adorned with pearls and crystals. They are used to anchor the veil that brides wear on their wedding day.
Aside from hair combs, hairbrushes are also an essential tool used design and clean hair. A hairbrush is a small brush with rigid bristles used in hair care for brushing, styling, and detangling human hair, or for brushing a domestic animal's fur. Hairbrushes are typically used on longer hair, while combs are normally used on shorter hair, but can be still used for long hair. A flat brush is used for detangling hair, a round brush for styling and curling hair, especially by a professional stylist, and with a blow dryer. A paddle brush is used to straighten hair. A hairbrush is also useful in removing loose hairs, and in increasing circulation to the scalp.
Here are some tips on how and when best to use your hair combs and brushes to help get the maximum care for your hair. Wet hair should be combed or brushed as little as possible. It would be best to wait until the hair is entirely dry before beginning the smoothing process with a brush or comb. After washing and drying, the hair is usually untangled with a brush or comb. For the best results, hair knots should not be pulled. Tangled hair should be carefully combed out, starting from the tips and moving toward the roots (from down to up). A horn comb would probably be the safest choice to use when you want something that will not damage your hair in the long run.. It is made out of keratin, a material similar to that of hair. A horn comb reduces the electrostatic, or electrical charging in hair. Remember to choose combs with blunt-edged points, as all sharp points and edges harm the hair.
